Caleb McDaniel was around Huff house birding and had been using Merlin ID. He mentioned in passing to me that Merlin picked up YBFL. Because I have yet to find a correctly identified vocalization or photo of YBFL in April in eBird, I was skeptical about Merlin. However, as we were tracking other birds, I heard the "peeu" call of YBFL about 10 minutes later in the distance. The bird called several more times after which I turned on my iphone recorder. The files provided are the raw unedited files. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in finding the bird because there was so much bird activity in the area, making it hard to focus in on any given bird. I also had to run back to teach. I returned late in the afternoon and caught a glimpse of an empid high in the canopy that was not an Acadian (shorter primary extension), but once again, was not able to get a clear view or photos. However, upon returning home, I examined the spectra and compared it to known YBFL calls, and it appears to be a remarkable match. 4 kHz on average. Call is about 25 ms long with a slight downward inflection/slur in the middle. Except for two wintering birds (in Florida and California), this appears to be the only audio or photographic record of YBFL in April in the United States.
