Have photos; one bird heard and seen on Fox Trail; other bird heard only on Puddle Pond Trail. So amazing tonight. This afternoon I went on my friend Tom Kerr’s Friday morning walk at Buffalo Audubon Society’s Beaver Meadow. At the end of the tour the group was discussing a Northern Saw-whet Owl that has been heard at a local park. Being unfamiliar with the park and needing this bird for my year list I was asking a lot of questions. In my head, making plans to go there tonight. One of the guys on the trip asked what a Saw-whet Owl sounded like. I happily gave 5-6 toots max. Almost immediately a real one answered me in broad daylight. Tom and I were ecstatic. We searched for over a half hour to find the bird for the group to see. We narrowed it down to a tree, but it was too high up to see. The bird called repeatedly the whole time we were searching. I went back tonight with Thomas Mudd III and his friend, we heard it, we found it, we saw it!! ❤️ Now I’ve seen Saw-whets before, sitting frozen , sleeping, roosting. Never have I heard one call and been able to watch it move around. This was a magical day.
