First winter plumage. Plump grey shorebird with orange legs and an orange base to bill. Wing coverts boldly edged in white. First winter scapulars and mantle feathers are evenly pale edged. Heavily spotted below. When sun shone the purple sheen could be seen. Something is going on with the right eye, possibly an injury or infection. The right eye is closing a lot and opening and closing very slowly, bringing the white eyelid over the eye. This is not immediately obvious because the sandpiper watches observers with its good left eye most of the time. See photos and videos
