Our most magical owl night ever! With at least 6 individuals heard making their sharp ‘skiew’ calls and surprisingly, one in the near distance doing a single hoot song. And after many a year of looking, we were graced with seeing 3 Boreal Owls. Two were up close and personal. I don’t know why the flashlight doesn’t send them flying, but it doesn’t and we were able to watch one actively scanning from its perch for prey - very cool. It was so busy looking for food that I was able to take a few flashlight iPhone pictures. While not award-winning, I’ll bet they are the best night time iPhone pictures of a Boreal Owl on eBird :-). It is a very robust-looking small owl, larger than Saw-whets. It was so close and abiding, we saw all the details on this bird. Overall Chocolate brown with white spots on the back. Front white with heavy chocolate brown streaks. Flat yellow eyes mesmerizing, especially when they do the head cock motion while scanning. White inner facial disk with gray on outer portions. Tiny white dots on brown crown. Light colored bill.
