Observasjonsdetaljer
Hawk flew into a tree in my yard. At first glance thought it was an immature Red-tailed Hawk but then felt it was too small and it didn't look quite right for a Red-tailed Hawk. I put binoculars on it and realized it was too small to be a Red-tailed Hawk and it had more streaking on the belly and chest than a Red-tailed would. Did notice the upper chest and the neck did not have streaking on it. Thought it was too large to be a Cooper's Hawk and the birds around it were not scared of it and continued to go to the feeder that was 15 feet below it. While it was sitting in the tree I noticed a black moustache like streak above the beak and a white streak above the eye. further eliminated a Cooper's Hawk The hawk then flew down to the ground and seemed to be searching for something before it flew off. When it flow off the wings look pointed and it had a narrow tail. Fortunately it flew back to my tree several minutes later and I was able to get a photo of it from the back side. Believe the size, streaking pattern on its chest, wing tip to tail tip ratio and dark moustache indicate it is a Broad-winged Hawk. Which would be rare for this area at this time of year but not rare for SE Wisconsin at this time of year.
