Seemingly close bird but muffled sound, progressively rising in volume. Bird not seen

2 birds initially responded to playback from a distance. When i got closer to the presumed location of one bird i had no response for 30 minutes, until one bird starting singing (double hoots) seemingly from above with a very muffled sound, slightly rising in volume. i couldn't put a light on the bird perched above the foliage
