had the rare opportunity to not only hear/record the call and song but also see/photograph this oftentimes hidden skulker - he was in an odd pose with drooped wings, perhaps sunning? in the field we thought this was a slam-dunk for EATO but when examining photos of our bird, the light-colored modeling on his back gave us pause so we looked through a plethora of Macaulay photos of EATOs in the eastern portion of their breeding range and found some birds with pure jet black backs and a few others with light-colored modeling like our bird has, then came across a photo from Illinois (link below) of a bird in the same odd droopy wing pose with similar light-colored modeling on the back that suggests both birds are fluffed up enough to reveal a bit of light base color beneath the black: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/598910081 this singer was combining what Pieplow terms EATOs' "zoo-ee" call (link below) with EATOs' "your tea-hee-hee-hee" song and although the first note/"drink" syllable of that song is dropped, Pieplow provides an example (link below) of a similar sans "drink" song recorded in Arkansas where SPTOs and EATOs would not be expected to overlap ranges: https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/peterson-field-guide-to-bird-sounds/?speciesCode=eastow&species=Eastern%20Towhee%20-%20Pipilo%20erythrophthalmus
