Observasjonsdetaljer
**Very rare in winter--apparently the first winter record for New Mexico, at least in eBird. While we were certainly surprised to see one, I hadn't realized they were quite this rare in the state given the number of winter records from Arizona and California. Bird was about 0.75km into New Mexico in same area as American Robins, Western Bluebirds and Townsend's Solitaires, but not directly associating with them. From Summer Tanager by grayish cheek, dark lores, dark bill and difference in bill shape. Extent of gray on cheeks and upperparts rule out other (very unlikely) subspecies. Tail shape and wings indicate a first-year bird; fairly bright individual with orangey throat on this date may suggest an immature male. Notes updated with video and photos on 24 Dec.
