Observasjonsdetaljer
I think this is probably a Mottled, although I was hoping it could be the American Black Duck spotted by Tim from Hickory Ranch a few days ago. Body seemed darker and lacking warm rusty brown tones of Mottled, and there was no white border around the speculum. High contrast white underwing. Sometimes the face looked a darker cold greyish brown, but in better light it appeared paler light brown. I could not tell if there was streaking on the face/neck, and pictures do not show it clearly. The pictures do seem to show a black spot at the gape (suggesting Mottled) and a more bluish (rather than purplish) speculum, also possibly suggesting Mottled, although the iridescence changed with the light. I'm curious what others think that have more experience separating these species
