***MEGA; first Massachusetts and apparent 2nd confirmed North American record. Spotted in one of first flocks of morning by Jeremiah Trimble, on water near Cory’s and Great Shearwaters. On first sight, notable characteristics were small size (similar to Great), dark-headed appearance, and thin dusky bill—quite different from other Calonectris taxa (Cory’s/Scopoli’s). Took off and flew right in front of boat, showing same characteristics in flight as well dark underside of primaries, long thin wings, long tail, and flight style more similar to Great Shearwater: snappier wingbeats and less ponderous flight than Cory’s. Flew off to east and lost among other Shearwater groups, despite our attempts to chase. Not seen again during 5 more hours in the area looking through the thousands of birds. Previous accepted record is from 15 August 2004 in North Carolina—an additional previous report off of Maryland in 2006 has since been determined to not be this species. Three other potential reports off of North Carolina (2013) and Florida and Massachusetts (2021). *JRT: amazing bird and incredibly fortuitous event with a great crew!; immediately recognized as a Cape Verde Shearwater when I first spotted the bird; but the process of coming to grips with being certain of such a rare bird was a separate process! Initial effort was to point the bird out to everyone else and luckily everyone on board recognized the interest in this bird; Nick maneuvered the boat so the bird was in better light and everyone eventually got on it on the water before the bird took off and and headed away; we tried to get on it and chase but it vanished and we were unable to track it down. We all did a quick photo review at that point to confirm my initial impressions and went through a full process of going through field marks; we were even able to get some photos out via text to friends with good seabird experience who concurred. Mega: first spotted sitting on water with 2 GRSH (later formed a loose flock with 4 total GRSH); first picked out and stood out as being a bit smaller than those; with a more muted brownish gray dirty face and no sharp demarcation between the head pattern and sides of throat/face; bill at a distance appeared a dingy gray for the proximal two thirds (ish) and a darker tip (when seen close perhaps the dingy gray had a hint of olive gray to it and was quite slender); the bird lacked the capped appearance of a GRSH with the head coloration blending into the back of the neck and perhaps slightly darker than mantle (but which similar in color); overall shape seemed thin and lanky on the water even compared to the GRSH; when bird took off and was a quicker jump from the water with more rapid wing beats than a COSH; many photos;
