Observasjonsdetaljer
*large number; three small groups e to w: 4 @ 14:05, 6 @ 14:31, and 9 @ 14:36; seemingly independent of the mostly earlier flocks totaling 43 at Cupsogue. This species seems less prone to stopping over than formerly, which is probably an indictment of habitat trends on LI over the past several decades. In any case, the Moriches Inlet marshes and flats have never in my experience been a favored feeding area, but rather an excellent setting to see singles or small flocks flying westward, on flight lines ranging from over the ocean to the northern part of the bay. The bulk of WHIM passing LI apparently over-fly us completely or cut the corner offshore from Cape Cod to the Mid Atlantic. Perhaps the line of thunderstorms to the west of LI today induced these flocks to drop down into tracks where we could connect.
