Observasjonsdetaljer
Continuing immature bird from yesterday in the same general area near stream SE of residence. Briefly saw in flight and wings did not seem overly broad compared to Common Black Hawk. Found it again sitting high in a cottonwood facing me. Streaking not nearly as thick as a Common Black Hawk’s would be and the undertail coverts were unstreaked. Well defined facial pattern dark malar, eyestripe and crown. White cheek patch. Thought it was an immature Gray Hawk, a formerly breeding species, but upon additional study, dark facial markings and pale cheek patch aren't quite distinct enough., no fine barring on thighs, and the barring on the tail is too wide. The annual undocumented reports of Gray Hawks here in late April and early May are almost certainly all similar Broad-winged Hawks.
