Observasjonsdetaljer
I scoped this duck from "downhill from roadside" spot on Muddy Pond. It was to my left in difficult light. Duck was small. It was diving repeatedly, then finally stayed up but tucked and never un-tucked. Could not get images through my scope but some grainy distant images with camera. Duck was swimming tail down and head up and forward, not the "classic" head back and tail up look for Ruddy. Bill looked somewhat swollen at top. It did not initially seem to be a Ruddy Duck to me, I did not think of one this time of year, but once duck tucked and put tail up, I thought, oh - could be. After looking at images and thinking about for time that is what I come to, Ruddy Duck. Black Scoter female I considered but bill doesn't seem right, size too small and coloring (especially pale under-tail) looks more Ruddy-like, also pale face patch confined only to face and not extending to neck. Male but not in breeding plumage, maybe first year.
