Observasjonsdetaljer
Irruption. Sweet! Two males, one of which was decked out head to almost toe in cold strawberry garb, my first in this plumage for Mass. The rest were in various drab yellow to russet plumages. Calling frequently like chiming bells. Only concerned about the crabapples under their beaks, and not with the large ape poking them and getting rained on by discarded fruit chunks. The photo of the two males shows the difference in the extent of red down the flanks. One male's red (bird in other photos) extends all the way down the flanks, and the other stops just below the lower breast. The rump of the redder male was entirely concolor, whereas the less red male's rump was a mix of red and orange. This variation might be age related, but neither Pyle nor BNA discuss this. Similarly, the female type birds had varying amounts of orange or yellow on the head and breast, again probably due to age, but I haven't yet found a mention of this in the literature.
