Sounds of male goldeneyes displaying. The sounds are faint and are best heard by using headphones or earbuds. Cropped and amplified by 10 dB. Noise from a nearby gas station and road is also audible.
Observasjonsdetaljer
Audio recordings. The males were displaying and calling. The number reached 120 by about 16:15; after that I didn't see any more come in. The number of goldeneyes is based on a detailed count using a Nikon ED50 spotting scope at 30x. No photos...I didn't realize that this would trip the eBird "high count" fllter. Initially the birds were grouped only about 50 yards offshore from the boat launch, but by 16:30 they had moved across to the west bank near the thick statnd of trees. When I arrived at 15:30 there were zero goldeneyes on the river near Ft. Halifax. They started arriving in groups of a few, ten, and then many more from up and downstream. This stretch of the river appears to be a regular roosting spot for this species in late December. I've found them here in substantial numbers late in the day for several consecutive years.
