A male Pied Honeyeater male perching and driving off Zebra Finch, then flying off. The Pied Honeyeater (Certhionyx variegatus) is a bird of Australia’s semi-arid shrublands, and the plaintive piping call of the male, usually made while displaying in flight, is evocative of those habitats. Like many of the smaller honeyeater species, Pied Honeyeaters are shy, and very difficult to approach. This male Pied Honeyeater was perched close to a male Zebra Finch. He then hopped over and drove off the finch before flying off himself. Elevation: 6 m. Date added to IBC: September 10, 2019.
