A Purple Swamphen collecting submerged rush corms then eating them from its foot. The south-western Australian race of the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio belluˆ) is more brightly coloured than the other races found in Australia. This adult Swamphen was standing in the shallows of Lake Booragoon, south of Perth, plunging its head under water to collect the submerged corms of rushes which it then ate, holding the food in its foot. Elevation: 10 m. Date added to IBC: April 26, 2019.
