A moulting Little Penguin sheltering under a walkway on Penguin Island. Little (or Fairy) Penguins (Eudyptula minor) are the smallest penguin species, weighing about a kilogram and standing only about 30-33 cm tall. They occur along the southern coastlines of Australia and New Zealand. They spend most of their time at sea and usually return to shore at night to avoid terrestrial predators. As with other Penguin species Little Penguins must stay ashore to moult – this one was hiding under a wooden walkway on Penguin Island, south of Perth in Western Australia. Elevation: 11 m. Date added to IBC: July 13, 2018.
