Imperial Shags fighting over a piece kelp for their nest. Imperial Shags (or Cormorants) (Leucocarbo atriceps albiventer) nest in large rookeries, often together with Southern Rockhopper Penguins in the Falkland Islands. The species is colonial and monogamous, and their tower-like nests of mud, guano and vegetation are spaced just out of pecking range from their neighbours! The nests are continually modified – one bird had arrived with a large piece of brown algae which was seized by its neighbour, and a tug-of-war for the prize ensued. Elevation: 20 m. Date added to IBC: February 5, 2019.
