screenshot from high-def video shot by Tim Barksdale, showing 3 birds in flight
Observasjonsdetaljer
known by locals and Nicasio Viña Sr. to be a spot where "las Brujas" gathered offshore and then flew inland up a narrow "chute" to the mountains, presumably to breed. We arrived before dark and began seeing many petrels flying and sitting on the water in a tight group offshore. The largest single count we got was 46 birds. We could hear them calling as they flew inland after dark, the ocean noise was too loud to get good recordings. Tim Barksdale took high-def video of the birds offshore, and while not high quality because of the fading light, this should serve to document probable breeding by Black-capped Petrels in Cuba, probably on the high ridges of Pico Turquino.
