Observasjonsdetaljer
*rare; winter-plumage; detected about 15:00 from breach on ocean front, ca. 200 m to the west; at that distance and lighting, its shape was the most distinctive thing: the crown rose from both bill and nape to a central, triangular, peak; neck slimmer and longer than in HOGR. We walked quickly westward to gain better light and noted details of head and neck plumage (more extensively dark than in HOGR), bill structure (slimmer, slightly longer, and more pointed than in HOGR), and obtained photos. At this point the bird was feeding actively and drifting west at about the pace of a leisurely walk (we would walk briskly for a minute to two to get past it, then study in good light for two minutes, then repeat). Eventually, it stopped feeding and swam out ca. 300 m, beyond the swift inshore drift, and we were joined by many team-mates from Misquamicut and Weekapaug territories in a festive wrap-up to today's Napatree CBC (its position at this point was even with 513 Atlantic Ave.). Note: this hotspot pin is positioned appropriately for the well-birded stretch of ocean front immediately west of the Weekapaug Breachway (and for this bird's position), but it is mis-named.
