Observasjonsdetaljer
**Very rare – seen shortly after 8am, flying s. with 3 RBGU. Did not pick up these birds until they were at the 6-Buoy, as they had likely just appeared out of an encroaching fog bank, making for a relatively brief observation. A 1st-winter bird that immediately stood out due to its darker upperparts and fast/choppy wingbeats. A bit smaller than RBGU with stocky, compact proportions-- short-necked, short-tailed; proportionately short wings w/ rounded wingtips, unmarked underwings. Extensive white on tail + thin small, black tail band. Helmeted appearance of head noticeable even when flying away; white eyelids suggestive in at least 1 photo. Extensive dark on head contrasted with pale neck. Underparts pale. My camera was in the car at the time due to misty conditions--was able to fire off a few somewhat recognizable, though very poor images as the bird moved past the jetty.
