NOTES: NML studies, Narragansett Bay, June-Aug. 1951. Large populations monitored in field and many captives (up to 0.19 m) acclimated in NML aquaria: low-frequency knocks, singly produced in males and females on ES, synchronized with muscular twinge and vibratory shudder. Nothing recorded during normal activity in the laboratory, although small thumps similar to those of the tautog are probable in the field. Loud scrunching noise during feeding. Fish, M.P. and W.H. Mowbray. 1970. Sounds of the Western North Atlantic fishes: a reference file of biological underwater sounds. Johns Hopkins Press. Baltimore. p. 136.
