Observasjonsdetaljer
Two Gray Catbirds were seen in close proximity to N. Beaver Creek Road about 200 yards east of Hwy 101. The male Gray Catbird sang almost continuously while we were in the area for about 30 minutes -- mostly from thick shrub cover, but also from exposed perches (for example: from the top of a wooden power pole and its guide wire cable, and also from a spruce tree next to the road). A second Gray Catbird, presumably a female, was first heard giving a soft mewing call from within a thick willow while the male was singing nearby. We later saw the female on several occasions fly to the perches where the male was singing and fly with him for short distances before disappearing into the surrounding shrubs. The behavior suggested courtship by the pair in an area that would be considered suitable Gray Catbird habitat (semi-open area, forest edges, and streamside shrub thickets), except a bit out of the expected range! Also, mature twinberry (Lonicera involucrata) fruits were abundant in the area. Footnote: Chuck Philo found the male catbird yesterday singing and calling in the same area where it was spotted today (no visual on it yesterday). Today, Wayne Hoffman heard the male singing around 7:35 a.m. and then sighted it shortly thereafter (~10-15 min.).
