Irruption year for WIPT.

An astounding and unexpected number. I was looking for WIPT and seeing prints in the snow everywhere. I noticed a stopped car of birders, and I pulled over. Ben Kilburn kindly pointed out the 3 WIPT he and his family had located. Almost immediately, we noticed several more, so 6 in total. A few minutes later, the 6 flew to a nearby hill where they were joined by more WIPT. The five of us watched as they congregated, thanks to a fox stalking them - until a total of 14 were observed. The fox is actually visible behind the WIPT in at least one of the photos. We happily watched the drift of ptarmigan until they disbursed. (Yes, "drift" is a collective noun for ptarmigan. 😄 ) A very memorable experience and the Kilburns were excellent company to enjoy it with!
