***very rare. Drake Aythya with dark gray back similar in shape to Ring-necked Duck. The sides were paler than Ring-necked, but a shade darker than the white sides of scaup. However, the sides were dark enough that a faint white "spur" from the Ring-necked parent still materialized. The head had a green sheen and there was a more obvious peak on the rear of the crown as in Ring-necked Duck. The bill had a ghost of the Ring-necked pattern; thin white line around the base, and a pale tip behind the nail. In flight, the trailing edge of the secondaries was white and this muted to gray on the primaries (not unlike Lesser Scaup!). Two traits made me go for GRSC as a parent- 1) the entire tip of the bill was black when viewed from the front (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/630699880). Although this trait could be due to RNDU alone, LESC x RNDU hybrids typically have a smaller nail. 2) The head was big and deep, unlike nearby LESC and RNDU. A Ring-necked Duck x Greater Scaup hybrid was present here in March 2024 (https://ebird.org/checklist/S164728277). The bill pattern differ on the individuals in these two reports. Last year's bird had a more extensive white and less black on the tip of the bill compared to this year's individual. The duck last year appeared clean with no brown splotches, suggesting a bird in its 2nd+ winter. I suspect the bill pattern in adults is more or less fixed, and if that's the case, these would be two separate individuals. But I don't know that for sure.
