Immediately visible upon my arrival at the boat launch, at one point surfacing at point-blank range. Actively diving and covering distance rapidly, going as far up the slough as the tiny "marina", and swimming back down slough past the boat launch until out of sight. Spent more time underwater than not. Appeared healthy, at least on the outside. Dove with vigor, with both wings appearing fully functional. Non-breeding plumage, probably an adult. Obvious alcid; basically black above and white below, black legs set far to the rear. Face mostly white but for the eye area and the blackish crescent around the rear of the auriculars, ruling out Thick-billed.
