At the southern tip of the westernmost flooded field, I saw a small waterbird swimming behind the thickets in the water. At first I thought it was a coot judging by the size and the swimming style (it was doing the head bob thing), but then I noticed it had somewhat of a crest and a more pointed, merganser-like bill. This got me into thinking Hooded Merganser, but this species and non-wooded flooded fields don't go together well. The bird took off and I noticed it was brownish overall with a white belly, and the crest was somewhat visible. The bird circled around the ponds a couple of times for a few minutes, and during that time I saw that it had a small white patch around its eye. It finally landed in the same area where I initially spotted it in. I'm guessing that this bird, like the Sora of last fall here, is just a migrant stopping by before heading off to appropriate habitat. Still very weird to see one here!
