Although sent to this location by two women who told us they had just seen a red-necked grebe at the mouth of the river which had been there for several days, alas, we did not find the bird. We found a hatch year horned grebe with a ruby red eye and only a pale tipped bill, not the dark eye and yellow bill base of a red-necked grebe. Couldn't even make it into an eared grebe because the upper and lower mandible bent evenly toward the bill tip rather than the lower mandible bending upwards toward the upper mandible and the bird had merely a sloping, not steep forehead and a flattened, not peaked crown. I have to give up this compulsion to list! But the photos are lovely. . .
