NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 8. Bulk reel: 374 5:40 & 5:55 AM. I didn't see these birds. The only species that should be up here around the building is argyrotis. However, some of these sounds don't seem to correspond to this species and there are some "grunt calls" that sound more like some that I've so far attributed to purpurascens. I am very much inclined to think that there are some purpurascens among the argyrotis. Calls, "wing whirs," "grunt calls." Then there is a repeated call that sounds much like the bother call of Otus guatemalae. However, later evidence seems to link it more to P. argyrotis. After listening to all material again, I think they may be all argyrotis. The "growls" or "grunts" are not exactly like those of purpurascens and may be the corresponding sound of argyrotis. 18 Nov 1966 PS. Quality: 3. Level: +10.
