NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 17(part). Bulk reel: 257. Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 258; Extra cut length: 4:38a) A continuation of Cut 16. After a while this pair tired and flew back to their normal drumming tree. But when I again played the drums they returned immediately and I recorded these drums. (Note: on the first two drums the parabola was not focused on the bird. Note the difference in pitch due to high frequency emphasis by the parabola.) Very little background noise. Quality: 1. Level: 5.Near the end of this the female gave some bother notes, then flew to the nest hole (about 20 m. away) of the female Lineated Woodpecker who was inside and there ensued a fight. The male P. [C.] melanoleucos joined the female on the tree but not in the fight. The Lineated remained in her hole and successfully intimidated the other. After a while the male and female P. [C.] melanoleucos returned to the former tree and both drummed. Then the male flew back toward his territory; then the female followed and she started drumming on their favorite drumming tree.b) Records some of these drums. Quality: 1-2. Level: 5.(This is continued as Cut #77 of Misc. Ambient.) Note: Some drums have run a bit longer.Note: It rained from ~ 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM. ~ 9:20 AM I heard a long drum from the favorite drumming tree and was intrigued, thinking it was this species. To my surprise, it turned out to be the female Lineated and the pair of P. [C.] melanoleucos had flown to the dead tree of Cuts 16c & 17a. See Lineated Cut #7. Sound stimulation was (other): playback drums. Response to playback: Approach. Other Behaviors: Bill Drumming.
