An Orange-crowned Warbler near the Lake Barber parking lot (Hamilton County, OH) on the Cincinnati CBC, 28 December 2025.
観察結果の詳細
Seen in shrubs and vines that line the shore of the unnamed rock quarry northeast of the parking lot. We were walking parallel to the large powerline, and the bird was seen before we reached the first tower. It was in a mixed flock of American Goldfinches, Yellow-rumped Warblers, sparrows, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. I first saw the bird at close range (less than 10 feet). I could see a gray crown, broken eye ring, dull greenish back, and greenish-yellow underparts. It darted away as I yelled our "Orange-crowned Warbler." A few minutes later, we relocated the bird a little further down the bank of the rock quarry. It was less than 15' from me and looking for food on a branch tip in plain view. This time almost everyone in the group got to see the bird, and the other experienced birders (including Ned Keller, Kirk Westendorf, Eric Burkholder, and Dave Quilligan) all agreed that this was an Orange-crowned Warbler. I attempted a photo, but the bird began to fly as I pressed the shutter. The photo that I am including is horrible, but it does show the yellowish undertail coverts, yellow-greenish underparts, greenish back, and perhaps its gray crown. If nothing else, the photo certainly separates the bird from the only common winter warbler in the area (Yellow-rumped) and another small greenish bird with an eye ring (Ruby-crowned Kinglet). Sorry I couldn't produce better.
