LIFER!!! ive been trying to see some phylloscopus warblers other than yellow browed pallas’s and dusky and just by looking at range maps the only likelier ones were pale legged eastern crowned and this. about 5 mins after checklist start I went to this board walking just south of bridge where there are some people fishing (despite the 禁止垂钓 signage) and started searching trees with a lot of yellow browed warbler activity (this was after I heard the pallas’s LW song) and there were some birds flying on a tree closer to me. Caught brief glimpses of one that wasn’t immediately eye catching or too different but shape was more elongated and didnt have as many markings as yellow browed so I snapped some pics and got back to checking the other warblers again. Later started reviewing the photos and initially thought arctic warbler since it only had a pretty plain wingbar and was more elongated in shape, but was sure it wasn’t the three common phylloscopus. Dongniao said two barred but I was unconvinced (obv because of the lack of wing bars) and just while I was confused it gave this sweet medium-high pitched quick chirp like call before it took off. Can’t really describe it well but it was rather unremarkable yet obviously different, played arctic warbler calls immediately and the one on merlin was a two note call higher pitched and more metallic and didn’t sound really right. Looked back at two barred again and the call seemed somewhat simialr, two barred was like a sparrow chirp but shorter but the one I heard in person sounded even shorter. then I reread the description and saw the part about it being extremely similar to greenish, which I was familiar with in terms of overall vibe and appearance, and with this I went back to the photos and realized it really did fit! The wing bar part is probably some type of molt/worn plumage and in the distance I started hearing those calls again and they started matching better. not sure about the yellow browed in the cities but this bird is almost certainly in stopover here as its not great breeding habitat and they’re less common? anyway one of the two highlights of the trip! After birding north of the bridge for 1+ hr went back south checking a row of trees for warblers I saw greenish warblers again (i.e. two barred, a change of mindset and searching for greenish made it very easy to find them) and got more good pics and continuous and satisfying views at about eye level about 3-4 m at the closest (couldn’t get pics as they moved too fast up close), heard their song as well which seemed like a muscial and rather random but sweet sounding series of chirps, a bit unlike greenish whose song is more regular trilling. Very very cool!
