RARE, continuing. Small gull, similar in appearance to BOGU but showing black carpal bar and shorter, less pointed wings, both observable with bird sitting in the water and in flight, with in-flight views also showing dark secondaries . First winter plumage with faint gray smudging on head and lacking the dark underwings of adults & 2nd winters. First found in mixed feeding flock (gulls, terns, loons, cormorants, mergansers) just northwest of center of large lake, but then was treated to some alone time as he/she peeled off solo to rest and preen. Hung out for ~10 minutes within 10m of my kayak. Back of camera doc photos:
