Continuing rarity, first spotted on Dec 8 by Kevin Dixon and Ron Lindeman. After it disappeared from Ballena Bay, we went to the west side of Crab Cove and observed it swimming fairly close to the rocks. Large immature loon, mostly grayish brownish with scalloped barring on back. Appeared a bit higher in the water than a Common Loon. Blocky head with pale face and throat. Slightly upturned bill, creamy colored at tip, and appeared more yellowish when backlit. Diving frequently. Saw it eating crabs. What a treat!
