We hiked down a steep hill, sliding in spots, as we tried to avoid grabbing onto prickly palm stems. The guide pointed to the thick vegetation in what looked like a type of tree fern--hidden there was a gorgeously-patterned still bird that blended perfectly in the mix of shadows and lights. The diagonal patterns of light, bordered by black, against the rusty of the body was beautiful. The eyes with slanted eyebrows gave it a really cat-like look. This is one of the birds I have dreamed of seeing and there it was in front of me, looking around--moving its head at an imperceptibly slow pace.
