Thank you to the birders who pulled me from my warming car when the bird appeared on the entrance road, feeding inches from the street at times to growing and great fanfare. Intricate, cryptic scaly patterning on back belied its reputation as a "plain" bird ...something more than subtly beautiful. May edit this with more details and better verbs once thawed out.
