Continuing from yesterday in the same habitat patch. Almost no aerial sallying at this hour, though individuals frequently seen flying buoyantly between trees. Seen feeding on open ponderosa pine cones in the canopy of live trees as well as probing the trunks of snags, tapping lightly. At first I interpreted the latter behavior as bark gleaning, but then I realized that I was frequently seeing individuals returning to the same areas on the same trunks after bouts of cone foraging on live trees, leading me to suspect that these birds were caching seeds. Occasional bouts of gyik yik yik calls, seemingly always associated with chases between two individuals when one would approach a snag where another was perching. All birds seen were adults. 6 is a minimum exact count but there might have been more; frequent movements between trees interspersed with periods of silent foraging made it difficult to be sure I wasn't missing some individuals.
