At this location, I normally presume hybrid or pure Ladder-backed as my selection, but this particular female for a few reasons seemed to be a decent fit for a Nuttall’s. Beyond the following plumage details, the vocalizations seemed to my ear to be fitting for Nuttall’s with the call being a double noted pi-dick. A female Ladder-backed showed up later looking like it was excavating a cavity and it called always a single note pwick. Plumage wise the female Nuttall’s was clean white in the spots like the loral area, the throat and breast where buff is normally present in Ladder-backed. It possessed a broad black shoulder bar and there was ample black in the mantle barring and facial marks to my eye. And, unlike the female Ladder-backed there was no evident tail barring. Photos
