spent time studying and photographing first-cycle plumage, especially axillaries and underwing coverts -- nothing comes close to the contrasty barred plumage of the odd gull I photographed at Salisbury Beach, MA earlier this month, especially the pale axillaries and underwing barred with dark brown. The most contrasty underwing feathers I saw today were still silvery brown with paler buff barring.
