I came kayaking to look for the tricolored heron, and was blessed with the surprise of the year, a willet. I even exclaimed as it flushed and saw the black and white wings. It continued to forage undeterred until I left. That time of year, it was very likely an unpaired male of the Western subspecies, which may one day be its own outright.
