Visible from Conant Rd just west of Rt 1A, this was a large white bird with long yellowish bill and orangish (maybe pinkish-orange) legs and feet. As the bird moved slightly, I could see black in the wings. Otherwise, I could see no other details. Looking at the bird from the dike, I could see the facial skin was yellow, slightly richer than the bill, and shaped like a small ovate square around the eye. I could not determine the eye color. This bird is likely responsible for sightings around New England and the Maritimes since late May. A small protuberance on the lateral right side of the bill near the tip is also present on birds seen at several sites around the region (NB, NS, and MA; and Quebec??? not sure we've seen whether that one has the bump). I could see the small bump on the bird today, but only because I knew to look for it. The bump is a small and inconspicuous swelling. ----- This bird's occurrence in Maine is as follows, according to Bill Sheehan and other reports: 10-12 July at Long Lake, St. Agatha.
