Smallish shorebirds with medium gray unstreaked backs and white underparts. Moderately short, stout, straight blackish bills. Faces white with a dark eye patch. Thin black stripe up the back of the neck connected to dark around the sides of the crown, with a circular white patch in the central crown. Some scattered dark feathers along the edges of the gray back, indicating juveniles that haven’t quite completed molting into winter plumage. Rather prominent white wing stripe in flight, also visible in folded wing. Larger than SPSA, smaller than KILL, both of which were near one individual. Both spent some time swimming and foraging like typical phalaropes, but more time foraging on the mud flats next to shore. Very active. One at the mouth of Sain Creek, the other along the shore north of the C-Ramp fishing structure. Possibly the same individuals reported by many over a week ago, but perhaps new birds blown in by recent storms?
