*High- I have found this species here in good numbers before, but this is the most that I have found in Monona County. They were on the north and the south side of the road, though more numerous on the south side. Interestingly, this species usually is active only in the morning and at some point, their activity level drops to near zero. On this day however, they remained active into the late morning and even into the afternoon. It seems that the wet/cloudy weather is likely the reason for this. For the first few years of birding western Iowa in October, I would specifically target this species, and I have photographed this species far more than any other (though I am not a photographer). Now I focus on any sparrow species that seems to be the most numerous on that day. Still, seeing 49 LeConte's Sparrows in one morning never gets old! I counted this species by 1s in my notebook as I birded. It is a distinctive species. Photo.
