What an experience with this bird! There upon arrival and walk away views at point blank. My iPhone was more effective than my camera and it was too close to focus with binocs at some points. The bird was actively feeding for the majority of the time and would hug the rail of the pool often swimming towards and past observers and a few tourists unaware of its presence. Thicker bill than Red-necked, with unstreaked back molting into gray. Yellow base of bill. Even the lobbed feet could be viewed through the water. My first experience with this species on land. iPhone pics attached.
