Black cap, shaggy towards the back. Bare red face with pale yellow eye. Bill thick, hooked and pale blue. Cheeks and neck white. Lower neck, back and chest scaled with black. Belly and thighs black. Legs long and bright yellow. Talons black. Wings black showing some chestnut feathers in strong light. Tail white with fine black stripes, tip black. White seen in primaries when the bird flew. Also, a golf ball-sized growth in the middle of its chest.
