Wow! That green never gets old. Was pishing a Willow patch for expected migrants when a bird flew right over me calling giving sharp chip notes. It kind of reminded me of a MacGillivray’s chip and I got on the bird as it landed at the base of small scraggly Willow. It took me maybe a whole second to realize “Oh Shit! Painted Bunting”. I hurried over 40 yards away. It quickly found a grasshopper to munch on. While devouring its meal the bunting didn’t mind me watching it. Typical young painted all green. Along levy at coordinates. Photos: (41.9371506, -124.1947860). I later learned that this is actually the 2nd record for the county. The first was an adult male at feeder found by Alan Barron. Not accepted by the CBRC because of thought of suspicious origin.
