Presumably GBBG/AHGU. Consulted with various experts on this one, and settled for an incomplete ID without further photo documentation. The bird first caught my eye when I was photographing the BOGU - mostly due to its large size and differing coloration than the other HY Am. Herrings around (brownish overall) - and I grabbed one doc shot just in case before going back to the BOGU, shrugging it of as a weird Herring in the moment… kicking myself for not registering the pale head and mottled upper parts as reminiscent of a black-backed gull sp. sooner! (which I only noticed after going through photos later)… Anyways, going of the one documentation shot I have (comments from others who thought on this bird): “Mostly it’s the blocky, whitish, head and (slightly) open bill that look off for Herring… the tail pattern, vent region and upperparts all look okay for Herring, though” “Was hoping for flight pics which would be diagnostic by themselves… The predominantly dark tertials and scapulars are odd for GBBG. Primary projection is for sure GBBG, head pattern/structure seems to be too” “The scapular pattern is not the norm for GBBG, and same for the greater covert patterns. Overall the pigment on the upperparts is a little less dark and contrasting than expected for GBBG, a little more brown and washy in places. That said, I see the resemblance in the face and bill, maybe even the body/underparts” ID will most likely remain gull sp. unless the bird can be refound and documented better… Reviewers, contact me if you have any opinions/you believe a species should be called. One photo TBA.
