One perplexing flock of 4 immature jaegers sitting right together on the water allowed a close approach and extensive looks before and after they flushed and started checking us out. Initially thought they might be LTJA but we hesitated and thought PAJA after they took flight. Consulted with Bruce Mactavish who confirmed Long-tailed Jaeger. In each, length of the nail is about equal to the length of the rest of the bill, along the culmen. With these we started to see a thin swarm of offshore flying moths (photo) that extended from Cape Ballard around Cape Race. Ten minutes later we saw a fifth dark bird (photos) flying together with an immature Parasitic Jaeger (see below).
