We were watching as the loon chick first entered the water. The first of two eggs hatched presumably this morning. One adult returned to the nest to incubate the remaining egg. In another behavior that we'd never observed before one of the adult loons returned briefly to the nest and retrieved the remains of the egg, carried it off a short distance and dove with it.
